Originally, two houses occupied the plot where the Hotel Marqués de Cárdenas de Montehermoso now stands. Until 1866, they belonged to the family of the Marquises of Cárdenas de Montehermoso. Already at this time, the houses maintained a commercial function on the ground floor, while the upper floors were used for domestic life. Foreclosed in 1879, the houses were put up for public auction in 1908 and bought in 1910 by Laureano Falla y Gutiérrez, a notable Cuban landowner.

By that date, the building was constructed with masonry walls and had a flat roof. Its layout included a ground floor, mezzanines and upper floor, a typology adopted by 18th century buildings, with functions perfectly distributed in each space. The building housed various commercial companies that set up their businesses and offices here. Between 1912 and 1925, several transformations were made to the building to adapt it to these functions and modernise its facilities.

In 1929, the widow and children of Laureano Falla y Gutiérrez inherited the building as part of the company “Sucesores de Laureano Falla y Gutiérrez”. One year later, the first floor was modified and a third floor was added, leaving the distribution as follows: ground floor, mezzanines and two upper floors.

Externally, the building offers an elegant and solid image, where the addition of the third floor integrates harmoniously with the neoclassical style of the previous floors, very much in line with the taste of the second half of the 19th century. The monumental staircase, the simple doorways, the atmospheres of the courtyards and the ironwork are some of the heritage values to be highlighted.
