Staying at the Palacio Cueto is a true experience. Located on the southeast corner of the Plaza Vieja and built in the early 20th century by architect Arturo Marqués, it is an outstanding exponent of Art Nouveau and Catalan modernism in Cuba. Originally, this building was a warehouse and hat factory of Mr. López y Cía., but later it was used as a hotel and, for many years, as a residential building.

The architect Arturo Marqués finished the construction work in February 1908, and the building was inhabited as of April of that same year. In 1910, the building was mortgaged in favor of Mr. José Cueto y Suárez, a Spanish merchant residing on Inquisidor Street. Although the exact date on which it began operating as a hotel is not specified, it is known that it was after the purchase of the building by Mr. Cueto, from whom it took its name. Over time, the building deteriorated and became a tenement house, changing its original use to domestic.

The Hotel Palacio Cueto stands out for its eclectic style and rich ornamentation. In its early years, the upper floors were used for lodging, while the first floor had different commercial uses, including a beautiful apothecary whose cedar counters stood out for their marvelous carving work.

Nearing its centennial, the Office of the Historian of the City began restoration work on the Cueto Palace with the aim of rescuing all the glamour and elegance of the building, as well as its hotel function.
